Another option is industrial coke. (in small thumb nail sized chunks) I can 
get 50# sacks of coke here in Birmingham for about $8 U.S. It burns hotter 
and MUCH cleaner than coal but requires more fire tending and a little 
getting used to. Once you realize that what normally took 3 min to get to 
the proper temp, now takes about half that you'll be on your way and 
burning up fewer pieces in the process. South Africa (if I remember right) 
has a fairly vibrant steel industry so you should be able to find it locally.
