And that is one of the bad side effects of claying ( or dirting?) Is
that moisture will get between the pan and the clay. Plus a bit of coal
dust then a mild acid forms and then instant rust..... In fact in a real
short time you can eat right thru the pan.
If it were me I think I would either not clay or I would build a forge
that did not need it.
