Depends on the application for the blade.  For metal cutting there's 
nothing better than bi-metallic.  But many wood saw and meat band saws 
aren't.  Then there's the bigger ones, like 6" and more, not to mention 
the  thicker ones used in the gang saws (4"+).  These are generally of a 
single steel such as L6 or similar properties.  They make great knives, 
especially patch knives for the reenactors.
