You can now get DVD burners that support all the formats DVD+R/RW,  DVD-R/RW. 
They are going down in price. These are good to get they are a bit more 
expensive but the knowlege that you can use them out of the computer makes the cost 
worth it.

  As for the format used on commercial DVD players... it is proprietary to 
the industry and is not the same as the little burner you can buy. But the 
newest version of Progressive scan DVD players can use all the DVD formats and 
CD's, MP3's and VCD's and more that I probably never heard of. Just remember that 
if you never heard of the company and the price is cheap.... stay away it is 
probably junk.
