If your forge is a flat pan with a plate with holes for the air you can
place bricks around the air holes and back fill the rest of the pan with
dirt and ash.
Green coal is easier to light than coke. To light green coal, take a sheet
of news paper and roll it into a tube and then form that into a donut. Put
that over the air holes. Break up some of your green coal into large pea
size and put on top of the paper. Light the paper and then give the fire a
little air. As the fire catches, give more air.
Even faster and easier, light a map gas torch and put the flame at the air
holes. Pile some pea sized green coal over the flame and supply air.
I always use a little green coal to start my coke with.
