The San Francisco Arts Commission is looking for an someone to build a
set of gates for the Pulgas Water Temple- a Roman style Temple built in
the 1930's on the Peninsula.
the budget is $155,000, all inclusive, no wiggle room. These public
arts commissions are fixed budget- no change orders or increases.
You will need to compete with other artists, initially on the basis of
past work, and if you make the short list they will pay $1500 for a
proposal.
This would be a good opportunity for someone who has a good portfolio
of metal work to break into public art.
You design the gates, but they wont pick you unless the gates work with
the site.

Entering one of these things is really good practice, even if you dont
get it- it forces you to update your slides and resume, to write a one
page letter about yourself and your work, and to think in terms of the
application process. Doing this once puts you way ahead the next time
you want to apply to a similar project. These jobs are not for
everyone, but for some people they are just the thing. If you have the
ability, the experience, and the tools to feel comfortable making
something that big, or even if you dont, but feel you could, these
enable people to make a big step forward in your own development.
How often does somebody come to you and say "heres $155,000, tell us
what YOU want to do".
Of course, its not quite that simple, first you gotta convince them you
can do the job, and that you have good ideas, but still, its quite an
opportunity.
