Hey Ed,
Check out the procedure in The Heat Treaters Guide.
After the high temp treatment there is a stabilizing stress releaving step
at about 320 F followed by a cryogenic quench which is immediately followed
by a tempering procedure as the billet slowly rises past 120 F, the billet
is tempered at 1000-1200 F 3 times.
Needless to say because of the complexity of the process there are many
short cuts that have been made by heat treaters Depending on how critical
the end product is.
