Hey Grant,
My salt pot is a vertical style, bird cage, blown propane forge with an
overall OD of 14" and an ID of 8" and is 20" high.
The insulation is 1" inswool.
It has a 4" ID 316 stainless pipe insert to hold the salt
The only difference between my vertical knife forge and this one is that the
gas exhaust is a 6" ID X 8" pipe welded at a 45 degree angle to the upper
side wall of the forge this is used also used to pre heat the blades enough
to drive off any surface moisture before immersing the blade in the liquid
salt.
There are several home brew formulas for the salts but I use a commercial
heat treating salt for the high temperature salt.
The current favorite low temperature salt is a bluing salt sold by Brownells
Gun smithing supplies
I'm presently gathering materials to make a new set of salt pots and forges
for them completely out of stainless steel because the salts take their toll
on the equipment in the high humidity of south Mississippi.
