First, I try to flux when red hot, before scale forms. Second, I can hit my
target from about 3 inches away so the bottle doesn't get too hot. Kind of
like the trick of testing to see if something is ready to weld by touching
it with a coat hanger while still in the fire, if you use the wrong coat
hanger it can make a sticky mess.
I got the idea while taking the Bob Patric welding class. Bob was showing
me how to make a tommahawk. Instead of using EZ-Weld as we had for
everything else we welded, Bob wanted to use borax. The only borax Tom
Clark had was for brazing, in a little squirt bottle. The idea stuck with
me, and when I saw the shampoo bottle in the trash I knew that I had to give
it a try. I like it.

Just curious how you keep your shampoo bottle from melting over the white
hot steel. Are you a sharpshooter at long range?
