[TheForge] Metalwork I Saw on my trip.

Ed,

I just (re)found a poor quality photocopy list of the Major Works of Samuel
Yellin out of some magazine or another. There's no identifier on it but I
suspect it was a Smithsonian article, I've had it about 15+ years. They
are listed by state, and when I moved to Cincinnati in '89 I called to check
on the Jergen's Mansion, after about 3 phone calls I got someone that told
me the whole estate had been demolished as/per the old man's will.

Checked out the Courthouse in Sarasota Fl. window/balcony rails looked good
from the ground, but on closer inspection had either corroded or been left
in the fire too long in some spots.

Also the list isn't complete, as I know of Oberlin College in N. Ohio, and
Volunteer Park in Seattle is hand written in.

Kevin

The best metalwork I saw on my trip from MN to VT was at the Cathedral of
Learning in Pittsburg. According to the security cop, it was done by "Sam
Ullelen". I was pretty sure it was Sam's work.

In the main gothic hall are 1" bar + grillwork railings with massice
flower-realistic rosetts, designs vary on every such connection detail as
you walk down the rail. Each section is a unique but complimentary new
design, again, with uniqe detials within itself. There is an enormous (15'
+ high maybe) gate with each collar a different chased pattern. Andirons in
the massive fireplace are dragons that about look you in the eye and who's
heads are forged from something like 4x6 bar.

There are theme classrooms surrounding the hall, each a unique country. We
were there after hours so we only got let in 3 by the nice guard. It
appears to me at least some of the lighting is Yellins. Many crafts of
Yellin's caliber are represented. Each door has unique hinges and latch
hardware, I'd bet all I saw were Yellin's work.

You can find similar work in Weston, WV. There is a Citizen's Bank done
inside and out by Yellin. Jay Hayes (usually lurking on this list) lives
near by and did a small rail off the parking lot.

It was a good thing I saw the Citizen's bank first. Walking into the
Cathedral of Learning at the end of the day, just because it looked cool
from the outside, and stumbling on the ironwork, not to mention wood and
glass work, caused plenty of heart trauma.

The architecture in Pittsburg is alone worh a long trip. I highly recommend
anyone going by check it out.

I have a bunch of pictures. I'm thinking about a puting them up on a
website. Is there a size limit on the dropbox?
