Okayyy. "Parkerized" is the key word. Sounds like it might be a bit
messy for a driveway gate but worth a try for small, pricey items.

Usual safety warning but no truly nasty chemicals.
Good tip. Tnx.
I've been cleaning up a couple of extremely rusty, wrought iron axe
heads. Used the electrolytic method we've discussed here but used
dilute phosphoric acid instead of soda. The pieces have a nice
uniform grey appearance and have shown no sign of rust after coming
out of the bath. (The cleaning revealed the grain. Both have
welded-in steel blades. One has a re-inforcing piece welded crossways
of the grain of the main chink of iron to form a more sturdy poll.
The other has a poll formed from setting down the bar brfore forming
the eye.
