[TheForge] thin black paint

I'm working on a music stand that I'd like to finish black. This will
be indoor use only, but rust would be very unwelcome. Seems to me a
black paint would be the best bet. However, I'd like something that
goes on nicely as a thin coat, not something that contributes
thickness.
Therefore, I was thinking of ah ordinary spray paint. Problem is, I
expect to first have to prime, then paint, and I'm concerned that the
layers may build up more than I'd like. Is there a black paint out
there that is self-priming on steel and iron oxide? (Or on steel alone
- I could pickle off the oxide if necessary.)
Another alternative would be to leave the piece black and use a clear
spray.
Anyone have any recommendations for such a use? (High-tech and
high-skill coatings are OUT.)
Thanks,
Bruce
