>All Hands: Does anyone out there have any experience with rust patination
of mild steel? I would like to try this finish on a large >piece, have not
tried it before and would be interested in hearing the experiences of my
fellows on this finish.

I make and rust over 1000 pieces of sculpture every year ranging from small
pieces to some 15 feet tall. I remove the mill scale either with
sandblasting or a dilute solution of muriatic acid. Then a mixture of 1 pint
hydrogen peroxide, 1/cup vinegar, and 13 cup of salt is sprayed on. The rust
starts to form immediately and within an hour or less the piece looks
rusted. I rinse it after any aware from an hour to 12 hrs. It continues to
rust quite fast.

For some folks tell them to come back in an hour and I will have a piece
rusted for them. They are very happy to come back an hour or two later and
see what was a black mill scaled piece now all rust. Of course it is not a
very deep rust, but it looks good and will continue to deepen, especially in
rainy or high humidity weather.

If you don't rinse it, it will turn what I consider a very ugly blackish
rust.
