Well, I am feeling better now. I paid $75 for my five footer-- I
couldn't get the guy down to $50 and wasn't willing to walk away, since
I hadn't seen them for sale new or used anywhere else. Years ago,
someone on this list recounted their cone mandrel lament. As I recall,
they had an uncle that lived in minesota that they visited every holiday
season. A year or so after he died, they mentioned at the family
gathering they were in to blacksmithing and looking for old tools.
The aunt's response was why didn't you say so sooner? Evidently the
uncle had collected several shipping containers of the stuff over the
years that had been auctioned upon his death. The poster lamented to
the Aunt, I had no idea, to which she replied "How could you miss it --
the driveway was lined with twelve blacksmiths cones topped with a hand
forged anchor chain." The poster remembered the driveway fence, but
had never seen it other than snow covered and never made the
connection. Its been about five years since he posted it, so he has
probably gotten over it by now.
