1) Not sure about Boston, but I know of a teacher that teaches weekend
classes on the other side of the state near NY, as well as down at
Brookfield Craft Center in CT and now up at a school in NH.
2) Simply put, a lifetime is too short to study blacksmithing. A longer
answer depends on what you're looking to do. My first weekend class I was
able to make a couple of hooks (S, J and nail) and even did a fireplace
poker which included a forge weld. My second weekend class I was able to
make a toasting fork, a fireplace trivet and a pair of tongs. Another class
and I know the basics of making old fashioned colonial door hardware. What
I'm finding is that it only takes me a couple of hours or days to learn a
new facet of blacksmithing... It then takes me a lot of work and practice
and time to master those skills. And I'm still not a master at them.
