I have a good friend who works in the diamond saw industry. His dad had
a small company back in the 70s and 80s making various size circular
diamond saw blades for the stone industry. After he finished high
school, his dad sent him to various places around the world to learn how
to straiten and tension blades after the segments had been brazed on the
blank. He works with a round faced 3# hammer on a 10'' square anvil. He
said most of the guys he learned from were in their 70s. He also spent
some time in a sweat shop in India where a bunch of kids sat on the floor
in front of small anvils straightening 7" blades. Because he's one of
the few people in the world who can do blades ranging in size from 6" up
to 10', he became a valuable commodity and has spent the last 15 years
moving from company to company, learning every aspect of the diamond saw
industry, and now has a very comfortable position running the shop in one
of the largest diamond saw companies in the world. It just goes to show,
you never know when hammer experience in traditional methods will pay
off.
