Dan,
I take my knives to 400 grit prior to etching. My etch for most materials
ie. L6, 1084, 1095, 15N20 and pure nickel is 4 parts distilled H2O and 1
part Ferric Chloride. The knife is degreased and etched for 10 minutes,
after the first etch clean with baking soda and water, pumice and water and
degrease again. Etch two more times the same as the first etch. After
etching blue and use 600 emery for a satin finish. It is not necessary to
heat the solution or etch more than thirty minutes. After this is done I
use 50 percent gun oil and 50 percent lemon oil (for wood finishing) mixed
together. It is good for wood, ivory, steel etc. It is a old timy
gunsmiths recipe. At times I also use Renaissance Wax on the blade.
