If you go with the idea of different textures,  you might consider this to
cut assembly time.  Instead of 2 x 2 x 1/4 squares, use 2 x 16 x 1/4 bars.
Score across the bars every 2" then texture every other square.  Now you
only have to assemble 8 bars instead of 64 squares.
