Pattern makers make patterns for casting, mostly.  Match plates, split =
patterns, wax/bronze/silver/whatever for invenstment castings (I paid =
for college doing this kind of work).  Their practical knowledge of =
solid geometry, especially intersecting forms, is usually earth shaking. =
 Building up a pattern from pieces in ways that produce forms that are =
either highly suited to thier function, pleasing to they eye, or most =
difficult of all both, is no mean art.  Much like die makers and tool =
makers, their cleverness can be most delightfully subtle.  I often look =
at cast pieces and attempt to decompose the forms into their component =
primitive pieces to figure out how they patterns were assembled.  I =
have, at times, failed to divine the means.  As I said, clever people.

what do "pattern makers" do that would require a different vice than the =
