If you're looking to build a propane burner, take a long look at the
side-arm burner on Ron Reil's site. I put one together the other night
in about 10 minutes. The hardest part about building this burner was
getting the assymetrical T fitting. This is a pretty special part that I
could only find in one plumbing store in my area. The Big Orange won't
carry this thing. At $10, it wasn't horribly expensive, but it is the
most expensive part.
The 10 minutes, though, didn't include making the jet or fitting up any
propane supply as I had that stuff from previous experiments. But,
compared to the Mongo series, this was a bazillion times easier.
Another thing I found - to connect the MIG tip to the 1/8 nipple for the
jet, I found lamp parts in my local hardware store. Apparently, the
hollow threaded rod for lamps is 1/8 pipe thread, so they make unions,
basically a short pipe threaded on the inside, to join these. And they
also make bushings that fit the union and have the same size inside hole
and thread as the Tweco MIG tips. So all you have to do is solder the
tip to the bushing to the union and you've got an easy, screw-on,
propane jet.
