[TheForge] Beaudry Parts

To All: I've been mucking about with my 300# Beaudry a bit, cleaning paint
and checking it over. I pulled the big springs out of the head to have a
look and found that at the top of each spring in the center of where they
contact the tensioning screws there is a hole. In one spring the hole held a
round pin about .5" x 1.5" with a coil spring around it. The other hole was
empty but I found the remains of the pin in the bottom of the head. So my
question is what is the function and importance of these parts and what is
supposed to hold them in the spring? There doesn't seem to be any sort of
seat left in the hole if there ever was one.
