Grease would be too viscous.  I think all the blowers used oil.  I don't
know what number my Buffalo is but it has a hole in the top plugged with a
stick.  Half of the top can be removed similar to the Champions.

I only put oil in when I first started using it.  It doesn't need much.

Whoops...  I had to re-read your question.

I at first thought it was the gear box you were talking about.  But no
matter, if the fan shaft runs through the gearbox, I still think it's oil.
I think there is enough splash from the gears to lubricate it .... once you
clean out the dirt.
