Thanks... but neither one... I forged a taper on a piece of  1" od pipe and 
it was wrapped (in one heat I might add) around the pipe. The taper was to 
make it easier to get the wrap off and to create the offset for the rat 
tail loop.

I was a little pleased ... and surprised, I managed to get the handle 
wrapped (about 15" total) in one heat. In front of an audience of about 25 
people no less.  It looked like a knew what I was doing ;^)

Once wrapped, the handle came out at 8". I did do a little tweaking and 
tightening on the anvil but the vast majority was done on the mandrel.
