John,
I repaired the heal on a Mouse hole anvil about 5 years ago and it is stil
holding up fine. What I did was got a block of steel about the size of the
piece missing 1.5 x 3 x 4 and since it was broken through the hardy hole I
put a graphite spacer in the hardy hole and built up weld to join the piece
to the body.
I used 7018 for the welding, but you could probably use 6011 or 6013 for all
but the last 1/2 " or so. I also repaired the face some at the same time
with the 7018. It dented a little at first but seems to have work hardened
so I need to regrind the surface. This is my demo anvil so it doesn't have
to be perfect. I use it 8-10 weekends pre year.
Don't forget to preheat the anvil to prevent stress cracks around the weld.
Most say around 400 but I only did about 250 and got away with it.
A repaired anvil is better than a broken one, or no anvil at all.
My shop anvil is a Hay-Budden and it has not given me any problems at all.

I have recently acquired a broken Hay-Budden anvil. The tail was
broken off and is gone. Postman mentions in his book that he has one
broken the same way. My questions, is this something unique to
Hay-Buddens? And has any one on the list repaired one broken like this
and how did you go about doing it?
Thanks in advance.
