Hi
Where are you? There might be an historic site near you where he can see 
some of the tools, etc.
Other than that this is a pretty wide topic. The most stripped down version 
would be;
Forge - something to heat metal using coal or charcoal for fuel
Iron - The further back the more expensive
Hammer - something to hit with
Anvil - Something to hit on
Small shop work - Horse shoes and what ever came in the door, rural areas 
would also sharpen plow blades
Can you come up with any specific questions/
