Happy Thanksgiving gang:
I was at the pharmacy yesterday and one of the fine folk there told me they
were taking an informal poll and I was the second person polled.
They asked, "What are you thankful for this year?"
My first reply was I'm very thankful I don't live in Afganistan, then I had
a couple more glib but accurate answers.
It got me thinking though and perhaps I shouldn't have been so glib. Sure
I'm thankful, VERY thankful I don't live in Afganistan. I think instead I
should've said I'm THANKFUL for that accident of fate that saw me born in
the U.S.
Sure, there are some wonderful countries around the world full of folk that
wouldn't trade places with me for anything. I'm thankful for that as well
but most of all I'm thankful I live here.
We all talk about freedom and most with some level of misconception. Free we
ain't, not really. There are rules I have to follow or at least not get
caught breaking, taxes, I have to go to work and so on. Still, nobody's
telling me what job I have to do, where I have to live or can't live, I can
even challenge the taxes with some hope of prevailing. Police don't just
break in my door to look around and if anybody else tries I have the right
(obligation really) to protect my, wife, critters, property and self.
I can experiment my little experiments and as long as I don't endanger
anybody else it's okay. If I want, I can build that RR rail wind chime I've
always wanted to build or a version of the propane fired pipe organ I
recently saw online. Hey, you want to build a brick sailboat? No problem so
long as you can afford the bricks and can take the weird looks. <grin>
Yeah, we have problems but we can work on them without too much GVT
interference and if it does get too uppity we can fire the bums.
I like it here and am so very thankful to be here. What little America asks
in return is a bargain.
As you sit down to dinner tonight, think how wonderful it is to be able to
say, "I ate too much again."
End ramble. <grin>
Happy turkey day my friends.
