Have you tried the proprietary "White Board Cleaner" available at most
corporate offices and places like Staples? It seems to do a pretty good
job not only on removing old, dried-on whiteboard marker, but also 
fixes the mistakes of those who use permanent marker on whiteboards.

the botle I keep in my office says "Contents: Glycol ether solvents 
and surfactants." for what it's worth. 

Might try giving it a shot, could save you from having to buy a new
whiteboard.
