[ re. glass on steel ]

In addition to very slow cooling, wouldn't it be important to get a
glass composition with a coefficient of expansion equal or very close
to that of iron?

The folks that make enamelware -- dishpans and such -- might know just
what to use. Also people selling plasma arc coating gear might know
about specially suited compositions. Seems to me that I was told that
hobbyist enamels are formulated to have a coefficient matching that of
copper. Maybe they'd be close enough.
