Ye gods, you've got an imagination. Raised from the top plate--I suppose
you could do it, but I didn't.
The vertical elements, and the two back plates are riveted in place. The
rivet holes were beveled, rivets hammered down, then filed flush. You
can see a couple of the rivets if you look carefully (more carefully
than I hammered). Look especially on the back boss toward the bottom
before the swelling on the end.
Lots of file work in finishing, increased by my relatively low
experience at the time.
