There's another fine point re: repairing cast iron that I read in a welding
manual years ago. If you prep by grinding, it smears the carbon all over the
surface to be welded, making it very difficult to bond to. However, if you
file it, (I bet the degreasing accomplishes the same thing) the file cuts
rather than smears and leaves a much cleaner surface.
I can really see the difference in ease of attachment.
