consignment works fine. the store owner *does* have an interest in your stuff selling. it's called overhead. unless he/she is charging admission that's how they pay for lights/heat/insurance/etc. it would be pointless for a gallery owner to display work without selling it. it would also be pointless to keep your work in a place it doesn't sell. move it. not everything will sell everywhere.

as far as shoplifting make sure the gallery owner has insurance that will cover your work.

set your price and stick too it. if it doesn't sell...move.

get a contract get a contract get a contract. spell out the details.

to answer dougs original question...if the owner is not enthusiastic about your work find another place. if they don't like it they won't sell it. maybe the owner understands his market better than you. find another place.

good luck.

>I haven't sold items through stores, but I've read about doing so. The best advice I've heard about consignment sales is: Don't Do It! The store owner has no investment in your wares - he gets to display them for free. If they're shoplifted, you're out, not him. If he never sells it, he's only out the space. There's nothing to prevent him from discounting your price and giving you a lesser price. All the cards are in his hands, none in yours.

>If the store owner is reluctant to buy my wares, should I offer to leave on consignment? What terms? Written contract? All opinions welcome.
