Actually, my slack tub (5 gallon plastic bucket) froze up a few times last
winter, but not hard enough that it broke the bucket. I read in a book
somewhere that a oak board stuck standing up in the slack tub will help some
on ice expansion, but that probably is for the first couple of inches of
ice.
This year I already put a bunch of softener salt in the bucket and about
half a bottle of dawn dishwashing detergent. Between the soap and the salt,
the dog finally stopped drinking from bucket! Perhaps it is a little like
super quench without the basic "H"
