When my son was 10 and still interested in forging we took our set up to his
playground and set up a little smithy. We had his class come out and watch
us do some bending and twisting. I did most of the talking and we shared
the forging pretty much equally. The high point for the little buggers was
when we had his teacher forge a primitive hook. Then I had to wait for the
forge to cool enough to load it into our van and haul everything home. It
was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun and education and I felt like a Dad
of the year contender. And, of course, I got 32 thankyou notes.

I've always been a fanatic about safety glasses, especially for kids, but
when we were practicing the day before he at some point took off his glasses
and you guessed it a piece of hot scale or something went right into his eye
and he fell to the ground clutching it. It scared the crap out of me, and
Dad of the year was pretty much out the window. During our demonstration he
had a large dressing over his right eye on which we drew a big eye. It made
for a pretty dramatic safety glasses demonstration
