There is art in craftsmanship. It's all in how you look at it. Most
people don't look at buildings as a piece of art, but if you take time
and look at it you can find that it's really artwork on a much smaller
scale. Or when someone crafts a chair, or a knife, or a gate. The
"craftsman" takes a thought, image, idea from his/her head and makes it
into something tangible, physical, real. Something you can see and feel.
That to me is what art is, no matter what materials you use to produce
it. But that's my opinion.

Yes its a *very* bad attitude! It's not a turd its a "pre-eaten
meal". (BTW my spell checker doesn't recognize "turd" and suggests
"Turk" as an alternative. is this some kind of devious ethnic slur?)
While we are on the subject: IMO the word "Artist" is used much too
freely
in general and among blacksmiths in particular. Seems like anyone who
can
put a decorative twist on a piece is now an "Artiste". What happened
to
the craftsmen? There is very little art (unless you mean "art" in
the
antiquated sense of "craft") there is good craftsmanship and there is
good craftsmanship spoiled by pretensions to "art"
If you really want to find bullshit blather read the "artists
statements" that people post on their websites. Apart from the usual
waffle about "harmony and integration", I found a gem at a woodworkers
site where asserts that he "tries to think like a piece of wood" I
guess
he was successful too!
