  Two good examples we saw:
At the Del. Art Museum there was a canvas about maybe 3 or 4 ft.
by 4 or 5 feet. It was painted pink, nothing else, just one shade
of pink. Looking at it you think OK, it's a pink canvas, so what.
The explanation was that the artist had gone back to childhood
vacation home/childhood home (I forget now) and matched the color
of the house! I doubt that the museum paid peanuts for that
painting.
At a First Friday gallery showings in Philly, there was a room
full of steel plates, a little bigger that the above mentioned
painting. The artist had painted wide horizontal stripes, about 2
to 4 on each one, something like 2 shades of gray and black, no
other color. The medium was described as steel plate and
Rustoleum. I forget the prices, not low. The couple in front of us
were absolutely gushing about how much they liked them. When they
got to the back and met the artist they were still gushing "You're
the artist!" and how wonderful, lovely, blah, blah, they were.
They probably bought at least one. The way they were carrying on,
they may have bought more than one.
It makes you wonder. I think we're missing out on something;-)
