Not quite that sweet. A "stick" as the yardman called it weighed about
900# which comes out to about 8c/lb. Still pretty good for 1080 tool
steel in useful shapes. On the drive back from Sante Fe, my little PU was
so loaded down at the back that I could barely see the road over the hood
and steering was kind of iffy :)
Tooling: The rail, when cut away from the web makes very nice stock for
heavy fullers, hammers etc. I also realized that the remainder - the web
with the base flange is easily trimmed to size for a hardy chisel .
To weld on a stem, I tried 6011 with pre and post heating but the welds
always cracked so I redid them with stainless rod and that seems to be holding.
