Bill, I'd say a 2 HP Baldor that runs at 1750 with thermal
protection would be a good bet. MSC, Grainger, or McMaster Carr should
carry such a unit.
240 volt works well also. Running the hammer against a brake will
add alot of heat for 120 volt operation - I found I needed a 40 amp circuit
to keep the breaker from poping all the time, but I have the brake wound up
tight to get a good one hit from the treadle.
A jack shaft is the best bet to keep the momentum for start up
there. Going straight from the motor to the hammer is hard on the motor. I
have yet to add all the parts to mine for the jackshaft system.
