Even better is to go ask the Yard Master for what you want. If you tell him
straight out, and don't intend to load up your truck with every piece of
loose steel you can find, he'll generally say, well, we've got some scrap
like that, over behind those bushes over there, but I certainly can't give
you permission to take RR property- you go get it, and he doesn't notice-
but you aren't likely to get in trouble, because he knows you're there and
why.
Only time he'd be likely to give you a flat no, is if Home Office is
sniffing around, and then just ask him another day. That's how I got my
first RR rail anvil....
