You have a grade five bolt. It is made of a mild carbon steel and
it designed to bend then snap........the grade 8's would be the worst thing
you could put as a shear pin as it hardly bends at all then snaps when it
gets to load. They are made of higher carbon steel, or alloy steel like
4140 and are heat treated.
Grade 2 bolts have no markings and are soft to the point they just
bend and stretch before breaking.
The Grade 2 or 5 would make the best shear pins. I'd start with a 2
and go to a 5 if it shears to easily. The hardware store should carry grade
2(no markings) or grade 5 (three markings).
