We could always start up the "ABANA sucks!" threads again
instead.<G>

  Serious stuff...

On that beancan style you were talking about. I took about 2' of
1-1/2" heavy wall iron pipe, capped one end and cut a hole about a
third again larger than my torch head in the side of it, back near
the cap. I needed to form a smooth half round in the end of a 5/8"
5150 bar. I tossed a small rock in the pipe to rest the bar stock
on, a brick outside to hold the main weight of the bar, then put
the torch head *just* outside of the hole and fired it up with a
MAPP bottle on it. Only took about four minutes to bring 18" or so
of the 5/8 up to high red working temp.

  I bought one of those $50 Bernz-o-matic torches that's a self
opening & igniting pistol on about 4' of hose, with a belt clip to
hold the bottle (handiest torch I've ever seen for working on
plumbing). There's a trigger lock on it to keep a steady flame,
that's all I used to bring that bar up to temp.
