Dave's way is the way I do it as well, but having observed what happens for
awhile now, I know that adding my kinda taper to 1/4" stock will add 1.25"
to the length. If I'm making hooks or decorative chain links, I use a piece
of rope the same diameter to measure the stock required and allowing for
that 3/4" at either end for the taper.
