I'd figure roughly 50-60% of the finished length. Would most likely measure a section, try it, and
readjust as necessary, so for the sizes mentioned, I'd measure about 3-4 inches, and see if that
got what I needed. A cone is about 1/3 of a cylinder, so a truncated cone would be somewhat larger.
