On second thought how about plain ole boiling water. That should clean the stuff/gunk out of the cast iron without adding any disagreable odors to the cookware.   My Dad has multiple-myloma. With all the messed up blood he has had proteins, white cell count high he was not anemic or low in iron he and the Dr attribute this to the use of CI cookware.  Hmmmm wonder if I'd fortified with teflon.
