Hi all,
Got a welding question. I am making a powerhammer. I have to attach a
stub axel to the upright support post of the hammer. The upright post is
the part that holds the eccentric wheel that make the hammer go up and down.
The upright is made from a 7ft length of /14 inch thick wall 6x8 that will
be filled with sand of concrete to dampen vibration. see image below . Okay
here is the question.
The back of the stub axel is flat. I could just stand it up on the post
just weld it on. It is going to take a lot of vibration. Should I cut a
hole in the post and weld the axel from the inside or do you think a surface
weld with good pentration will be enough. What about adding welded supports
to the inside of post? The axel is too short to fit all the way through to
the back side of the post, but I could weld an extension on it. Am I
overkilling here? Would a simple surface weld hold? I am not worried about
the quality of the weld just the amount of vibration this will see.
Thanks
Dan
