Ralph,
Centaur Forge sells short pieces. They have H13 in 1/2" and 5/8" rounds in
8", 10" & 12" pieces. Prices range from $5 to $7 ea. I'm told that it
comes in an annealed state and you can cut it through with a hack saw ...
you won't do this once you harden it.
A good scrounge source (generally for 3/8" up to 1/2", maybe more) is
injection molding shops and factories. They use it for ejection
pins. They buy standard lengths with nice flat heads on them. When one in
use gets even the slightest bit worn they pull them and put new ones in
after cutting to length for the particular mold. They throw the cut off
ends and the old used pins in the dumpster. There's one member of UMBA
that lives near such a plant and they actually save all their reject pins
and cut offs for him. At our last informal gathering here in Green Bay he
brought a box full of H13 and we were free to take all we wanted. Great guy.
