I've uploaded a picture of a vise to the "tools" album at theforge's photo
site.

Does anyone know what kind of vise this is? I know there is one on the
bench in the workshop at Centaur Forge, but don't know the type name. It
has a hole in the bottom of the inner jaw body to accept a piece of 3/4"
pipe for a leg. It is all cast. The body also swivels vertically, not
horizontally. The back piece where it mounts on a bench is anvil shaped,
but is also cast iron, with a slot in the bottom for a bolt head w/washer
to be used to tighten it to the bench.

The steel jaw inserts for the top are missing. Just below the step where
the steel inserts would be is a round groove that looks to be about a 3/8"
radius. This groove is smooth and not serrated. Just below this and
obvious in the picture are serrated or toothed notches which I assume are
for holding pipe from turning when a fitting is being tightened on.

At this point I'm thinking that it's some sort of plumbers vise. Any
thoughts or other conjecture here?
