 Bob, cause old power hammers are nostalgic, that's why old machines are worth so much. Perceived value.  I have seen several newspaer articles about smiths, the pics are usually of the smith in front of an old hammer if he has one. The air hammer hardly ever gets included.   
Supply and demand is the american way.

true enough. but it takes a lot of gas to put together $3000 too. after the tax man is done you have to make more like $4000 to have $3000 to spend.

shop rate only really counts if you have someone who is there to give it too you. fortunatly we can work for nothing when there are no paying jobs.

i do agree with you tho. different guys do different things.
