[TheForge] Forging of Chrome plated steel

A very quick, non-authoritative search reveals the hexavalent chromium =
(like chromium trioxide) is cancer-causing. Apparently chromium dioxide =
is not so toxic. I do not know whether the trioxide would form if you =
forge a bumper, but, judging by the fact that it is a very strong =
oxidizer, I suspect it would not.

BTW, there is much confusion about the term "heavy metal". Chromium is =
NOT a heavy metal. With an atomic weight of 52, it's lighter than iron =
(AW 56). =20

Even zinc (AW 65) is not a heavy metal. That is not to say these metals =
cannot be toxic. That's a separate issue.

Heavy metals typically are bad because the body doesn't eliminate them =AF =
so small exposures are cumulative.

Are there any serious risk's involved with forging of Chrome plated metal,
such as old car bumpers? Seems to me I remember toxic problems similar to
forging galvanized mentioned. Thanks!

Larry
