I'm going to forward this on to a friend who is an MD, and see what he says, but my impression of chrome and zinc is that they react just like any other heavy metal in your system, and are a Bad Thing. They certainly
aren't as poisonous as, say, vanadium or lead, but they do tend to accumulate in your system, and too much will make you very sick. Zinc, btw is very soft, and slippery, like graphite,and thus more easily ingested

The reason for this is that it's difficult for your liver to excrete these materials, and that's where they tend to accumulate.

Randy? Just reply to me, and I'll see that the guys on the Forge get your answer. They're basicly asking about effects of forging chrome plated steel, with or without a breathing mask, and zinc got included in a later
posting.
