After posting my thoughts on forging chrome plated stuff, I had a 
thought:  Ask Bill (my brother-in-law), he's a chemist and worked in a 
heavy metals hazardous waste facility for a while.  He's not an 'expert' o 
the specifics of our concerns about forging chrome plated stuff, but he 
surely knows more than I do on the subject.  So I asked and he replied as 
follows <I added the bold emphasis>:

So, it seems from this and from Mike Sweany's post that there is a concern 
here, but that some safety rules will minimize the risk.  In my case, I 
think I'll avoid the risk and those chrome plated 1/4" rods can stay in the 
scrap bin at the machine shop.  1/4"rnd rod is cheap enough when bought 
new, so why risk it?
